THE CORE OF SISSEL EDELBO IS UP-CYCLING OF VINTAGE SARIS AND A LOVE FOR INDIAN CULTURE. BUYING OUR CLOTHES IS SUPPORTING A SUSTAINABLE, VIBRANT FUTURE FOR THE FASHION INDUSTRY AND THE WORLD. EACH of our PIECEs TELLS THE STORY OF THE INDIAN HERITAGE AND THE AMAZING WOMEN, ALL DRESSED IN THEIR TRADITIONAL VIBRANT SARIS.
We mix print and mystery with a simple nordic cut, so our customers can choose sustainable clothes and enable the story of the saris to continue. The saris are all unique and different in both weaving and quality. For us it is essential that they are up-cycled, and we put great effort and joy in selecting the most beautiful sari in pattern, color and quality.
Sissel Edelbo has existed since 2004. The two visionary owners of the brand are Jeanne Sissel Thomsen and Christina Edelbo Petersen.
Their vision is to produce unique pieces made from beautiful vintage saris and adding new life and use to a traditional cultural fabric through modern cuts and silhouettes. The reuse of these antique sari fabrics is also a way of production that is friendly to the environment. Every single sari used in the SISSEL EDELBO collections is handpicked to procure just the right prints and colours for the garments.

We couldn’t be more proud to present a new sustainable product in SISSEL EDELBO: Tees made in TENCEL®.
TENCEL® is the ‘fiber of the future’. The fiber is a lyocell fiber which is delicate and soft and made of FSC-certified wood from sustainably grown trees. The unique production process recycles almost 100% of the solvent used in a closed loop system.
This special process received the “European Award for the Environment” from the European Union.
We have found a highly ethical manufacturer that cares for their workers and our environment - just the way we want to produce. They take care in adopting environmentally friendly production methods throughout the whole manufacturing process. Furthermore, all their factories and units electricity is powered by green electricity from wind turbines.

As a sustainable brand we always work with different solutions to limit waste. Our Zero Waste concept has the goal to use the entire vintage sari we up-cycle for our garments, thus we use the leftover cuttings of fabric for our small items such as hairbands, belts and scarfs.
In our previous collection as well as our Spring Summer 17, we have expanded the Zero Waste concept to our signature kimonos. Our kimonos are usually made from one sari, but a big selection of saris have errors or holes which means they don’t offer enough fabric for a whole style but only smaller cuttings. Therefore, we have chosen our classic kimono styles as well as one new dress to be made from multiple saris - that normally wouldn’t qualify. The beautiful result of these combination-pieces can be seen on our Lotus Short Mix Kimono, Magnolia Long Mix Kimono, Morning Glory Long Pocket Mix Kimono and Hope L/S Dress. This way any sari with errors can be used for our designs and we continue to limit waste to a new level.
The story continues in our sustainable Fall-Winter 17 collection. The collection is inspired by the book “Utopia” by Sir Thomas More, published in 1516, that tells the story of an imaginary and ideal society, where even prisoners’ chains are made of gold.
Throughout time we have always striven to nd an equilibrium between our external environment and ourselves. How can all our actions increase our own vitality and also the health of the planet? Utopia by SISSEL EDELBO is all about nding this ultimate harmony between our environment and ourselves.
In between thying and feeling grounded, floating like stardust, yet just laying in the moist grass, we are connected to our own pure energy.
The fall breeze fades the colors into a beautiful dusty color palette garnished by a spark of red. The playful mix of prints and colors give the collection a unique character and the reuse of Indian vintage saris helps us connect to a feeling of global unity.
From dresses with high neck and ruffles and mixed printed kimonos to statement t-shirts and sweat, our sustainable collection provides a casual and relaxed aesthetic, yet an ultra-sophisticated look. The well-balanced silhouettes with focus on details and the perfect fit make the collection suitable for everyday,
celebration and a utopian lifestyle.
